Prima takes its name from a favorite ski run in the Rocky Mountains, reflecting our roots and our respect for the terrain we operate in. We are committed to responsible energy development of energy reserves and rely on technical expertise and experience to reduce risk and unlock value in a constantly evolving energy landscape.
Prima maintains a debt-free balance sheet and is actively evaluating acquisition opportunities across the DJ, Powder River, and Williston basins. Preferred acquisitions include a mixture of PDP and PUD inventory through operated working interest. The company is flexible on deal structure and will consider farm-ins, trades, or outright cash acquisitions. Prima is known for disciplined evaluation and the ability to move quickly to close.
Prima Exploration was incorporated in 1980. Over its history, Prima has generated and drilled prospects, and operated across the DJ, Kansas, Green River, Powder River, and Williston basins.
In its early years, the company focused on acquiring and optimizing producing properties, with an emphasis on improving well performance and profitability. In 1995, Prima shifted its focus to drilling operations and participated in the drilling of several hundred coalbed methane wells in the Powder River Basin. Later the company implemented a Red River horizontal well waterflood in the Williston Basin.
In 2005, Prima participated in the drilling of the first horizontal Bakken wells in Mountrail County, a prospect generated by Prima. The years that followed saw a continued operating presence in the Williston and Powder River basins, along with expansion into the Delaware Basin in 2016. There, Prima drilled unconventional Bone Spring wells and operated in northern Lea County before exiting in early 2025.
Most recently, Prima returned to the DJ Basin, where it now operates Codell wells in Wyoming.
Prima currently operates in the DJ, Powder River and Williston basins.
